Taipei, Taiwan has released an aggressive multi-step plan to make the city more environmentally friendly.

Eco City Taipei is in line with the Urban Environmental Accords and the Natural Steps from Sweden. These regulations name four principles for sustainability. They are: to not transmit poison, enhance ecology function, conserve natural resources, and share benefits of development equitably.

The goal of Eco City Taipei is to make the city operate in harmony with nature. The planners for the project say that greening the city will actually help protect it from flooding. Flooding is a huge problem in the region. Typhoon Morakot crippled Taiwan in August with massive flooding.

Planners on this project also worked on the Beitou library, which is considered the greenest building in Taiwan
