55 Degrees North - Newcastle
The bold coloured walls act as a distinctive landmark in the city
Public space that uses bold colours and distinctive design has created a positive identity for the 55 Degrees North development of apartments and offices. Designed by Colour: Urban Design.
Sitting on a traffic roundabout on a complex but key site within Newcastle City Centre, this new publicly accessible but privately owned space has been created as part of a redevelopment scheme to transform Swan house, a redundant 1960’s office block, into a mixed use, mainly residential, development.
The designers of the public space, Colour: Urban Design Ltd, were brought on board by the lead architect, Ryder HKS, in May 2001 to address the poor quality existing environment and create a prestige setting to the new development. The resulting scheme completed in 2003, has not only been a commercial success, proving vital to the marketing and speedy sale of the apartments, but has also created a new public space, opened up important views to key Newcastle landmarks, and radically improved access to and through the site.
The scheme was awarded the 2003 Lord Mayors Design Award by Newcastle City Centre.
