Greyfriars Community Project Edinburgh
In 2004 Gareth Hoskins Architects won an invited competition run by a joint client body consisting of Greyfriars Kirk and Hillcrest Housing Association to design a mixed-use development in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. The new building will replace the unlisted Greyfriars Kirkhouse, its adjacent yard and three derelict industrial buildings.
The brief includes arts and performance facilities, training kitchen, wood workshop, counselling and support spaces for the homeless, and thirteen social housing units. As well as providing housing, it will serve to extend and develop existing services, integrate a marginalised group with the wider community and introduce opportunities for community enterprise. Gareth Hoskins Architects aim is to contribute a strong contemporary addition to the World Heritage Site through a building of exceptional architectural merit that will make those who live in and use it feel proud
